Every day at school counts!

Regular attendance helps children build strong friendships, stay confident in their learning and dvelop valuable routines that support them throughout life.

Why attendance matters

• Consistent learning: Key concepts in learning build step-by-step each day.  Missing school can create gaps that take time to bridge.
• Social Connections: Daily interaction with peers strengthens friendships, teamwork skills, and a sense of belonging in our Bromham School community.
• Confidence and Wellbeing: Arriving on time and attending regularly helps children to feel secure, prepared, and ready to engage in daily life at school.

There are 190 days in a school year which leaves 175 days to spend on family time, shopping, appointments and other things.

Understanding Attendance Law

Under UK Education law, parents and carers have a legal duty to ensure that their child receives a full-time education.  If they have registered their child at school, this means attending school regularly.

While the legal framework ensures every child's right to an education, our focus is always on working together to give your child the best possible experience at school.  Good attendance is an attendance rate of 95% or above, and we aim to support every family in reaching this.

As a school, we will follow the Department for Education guidance, 'Working Together to Improve School Attendance', which was updated in July 2026.

Medical appointments

Where possible, all appointments should be booked outside of school hours.  Where this is not possible, the amount of school time missed should be kept to a minumim.  This may mean bringing your child to school before an appointment and dropping them back afterwards.  We ask that evidence of all medical/dental appointments during term time is provided in order that we may authorise the absence. 

Too ill to attend school?

We understand that illness happens and there may be circumstances when your child is just too poorly to attend school.  We ask that the office is informed of this on each day of absence.

However, children may attend school with minor ailments (toothache, headache, stomach ache, cold, sore throat) if they feel well enough and over the counter medicines can be given before school.  School will contact you if your child becomes too poorly to remain in school.

Children should remain absent from school for 48 hours following vomiting and/or diarrhoea.

Unauthorised Leave in Term Time (Holidays)

Children are not entitled to holidays in term time. Family holidays should be taken during school holiday periods.

Requests for leave due to exceptional circumstances preventing the period of leave being taken during school holidays must be made in writing to the Headteacher.  A form must be completed and these are available from the school office.

Fines may be issued where unauthorised leave has been taken during term time.  There are:

Absence during Term Time

Children must not be absent from school for:

• Day trips
• Shopping
• Birthdays
• Baby Sitting
• Parent/carer or sibling illness

Reporting Absence

It is a parent/carer’s responsibility to notify school if their child is absent. A reason must be provided.

Support

If your child is struggling with attendnace, feeling anxious about coming to school, or if your family is going through a difficult time, please reach out to us early.

• Open communication: Contact your child's class teacher or our office team as soon as possible if your child needs to be absent.
• Targeted support: We can work with you to create tailored plans, adjust morning routines, or offer gentle encouragement to help your child feel comfortable arriving each day.
